Package selection tips for selecting an ERP package

Is your company ready for a new ERP package, perhaps because the current one is no longer supported, and are you exploring the possibilities? Package selection is often difficult and complex, and does not come up regularly, so you most likely have little experience. And this, even though there are more than 200 different ERP packages, with differences often difficult to discern beforehand. We would be happy to provide you with tips and advice on choosing the right ERP package.

What is the future of the ERP package?

First, it is important to determine the future of the desired ERP software. After all, the package is intended to last for several years. There are several points you can use to assess the software’s future-proofing. For example, check which language the ERP package is written in. How many companies are currently using it? And is it used only in the Netherlands, or elsewhere in the world as well? Furthermore, it is important to check whether multiple suppliers offer this package. Should you not click with the supplier you currently have in mind, or if you are ultimately not satisfied, you can still proceed with another supplier without choosing a different package.

Not only package selection, but also supplier selection

Naturally, the ERP package must align sufficiently with your business processes. After all, ERP software must support your processes, enabling you to work better and smarter. Does the supplier understand your business processes? Do they grasp your workload and identify the bottlenecks? You can test this by asking the supplier to explain your processes. Additionally, consider how flexible the ERP package is. Is it a package that is the same for many users, or is it possible to customize specific features to suit your processes?

Is the partnership with the supplier suitable for the long term?

Understandably, you will quickly focus on the software’s functionality. However, be aware that it is important to consider the supplier’s qualities carefully. It is never the case that you part ways after the ERP implementation is complete. There are sufficient reasons to continue working closely with the supplier even after implementation. Furthermore, your business processes may change, for example, due to legislation and regulations, or trends and developments. The goal, therefore, is to enter into a long-term partnership with the supplier. Can you commit to a partnership with this party for the next 5 to 10 years? The final package selection must be based on this.
