Microsoft Navision users: it’s time to move to the cloud
At the beginning of this year, we explained that Microsoft Navision’s end is near. Meanwhile, no version of Navision is still receiving basic support, and only a few are receiving security updates. Navision is still an on-premise software package, which means that the in-house IT department always needs to take action to resolve issues. Are you still one of those on-premise software users? We would happily explain why it is time to move to the cloud.
What is on-premise software?
Before we continue, it may be wise to explain what on-premise software is. If you are or have been an on-premise user, you probably already know this, but on-premise software is installed on your server. On-premise literally means ‘on location’. And because the software runs on your server, you are responsible for security, management, and availability. Therefore, you will always need your IT department with an on-premise package.
Microsoft Navision NAV vs. Dynamics 365 Business Central
Dynamics Navision (NAV) is an on-premise software package, the most significant difference from Dynamics 365 Business Central. Microsoft introduced Business Central in 2018 as the successor to Dynamics NAV and referred to it as NAV in the cloud. Dynamics 365 Business Central is cloud-based software and is no longer installed on your server. Instead, it is hosted in Microsoft’s cloud environment, making Microsoft responsible for management, security, and updates.
Microsoft Navision NAV is no longer supported
Microsoft Navision NAV has not been available for new users for some time now. However, the outdated Navision versions were still supported by Microsoft for existing users, but according to Microsoft’s lifecycle policy, that support ended mainly earlier this year. Only a few versions still receive extended support with security-related updates, although that is rapidly ending. Without security updates, your organization runs a significant risk of becoming a victim of cybercriminals. It is a logical and necessary step to transition to the successor in the cloud as soon as possible: Microsoft Business Central.
Cloud software is safer than ever
If you decide to switch to Business Central in the cloud, a direct advantage is that your software in the cloud is safer than your on-premise software ever was. We just mentioned that Microsoft is responsible for cloud software management, security, and updates. Microsoft is a massive player with millions of users worldwide. They invest heavily in this platform’s performance, reliability, and security yearly. You can imagine that no other party can match this, which ensures that you are automatically guaranteed continuity and innovation of the cloud-based software package.
Cloud software does not require actions from your IT department
Furthermore, you no longer need your IT department to manage the software. You had to download and install updates with an on-premise package like Microsoft Navision. With Dynamics Business Central in the cloud, this happens automatically, and you do not need to take any action. If problems occur, Microsoft will take action immediately, without you having to do anything.
Does your organization need help with new cloud software?
